Sylvan Esso at the Vogue

Sylvan Esso, the electro-pop duo from North Carolina, brought their infectious energy and catchy tunes to Vancouver's Vogue Theatre on August 25, 2023. Fans of the band were treated to a dazzling performance that showcased their signature blend of folk-inspired vocals, synth-based beats, and live looping.

The show opened with “Alarm” from latest album, No Rules, and followed with the upbeat track "Ferris Wheel", which helped set the tone for the night. Lead singer Amelia Meath danced across the stage in a sheer and flowy dress, which she eventually peeled off to reveal a dominatrix-style latex top and bottom. Over the course of the 20-song set, she engaged the audience with her charismatic presence and powerful voice. Meanwhile her partner, producer and multi-instrumentalist Nick Sanborn, danced to the beat behind his keyboards, creating an infectious sonic backdrop for each song while using a variety of gadgets and pedals. The pair had a natural chemistry and rapport, often exchanging smiles between songs.

The setlist featured songs from their entire catalog, as well as some surprises. Some of the highlights included "Die Young", a darkly humorous anthem about defying fate and "Hey Mami", a playful ode to street harassment. After a thunderous request for “one more song” from the crowd, Sylvan Esso returned to the stage, and performed “Radio,” “Coffee” and “Echo Party.”

Sylvan Esso proved once again why they are one of the most exciting and innovative acts in the indie music scene. Their live show was a captivating and memorable experience that left the audience wanting more. They delivered a perfect balance of emotion, humor, and groove, and made everyone feel like they were part of a special moment.
